Young people don’t want to be second to anyone. Everyone wants to be an overnight star. Look how many years I had to wait, how many roads I had to travel, how many songs I had to sing. And now I’m just beginning, never ending.

I was young. I was newly married. And I had worked like a dog. I just wanted to live and travel.

I enjoy the preparatory elements of travel – packing my bags and choosing my outfits – but my favourite part is getting there.

You never know when some small thing will lead to a big idea. Travel is very inspirational – but it’s in the ordinary that I find my themes of love and work and family.

I travel around and hear from so many kids. Their parents say they were always very picky but they watch the show and they want to try stuff. The show is entertainment, but I think it has done so much for the public perception of what food can be.

I wanted to travel with my dad to be close to him again. Having babies and raising my own family took so much of my time, I didn’t have a chance to be with him very often.

But my sense in talking to people when I travel is that the film business is not that dissimilar from a lot of other businesses.

Then, after the war it was impossible to travel, after so many years of Hitler and Stalin.
